The Ultimate Icelandair Baggage Guide

Here’s everything you need to know about Icelandair’s baggage allowances, including hand baggage, checked baggage, and excess baggage. We endeavour to keep this information up to date; however, it may change at short notice and depends on several factors, so always check your booking confirmation from Icelandair.

Each passenger on an Icelandair-operated flight is allowed one piece of carry-on baggage and one small personal item. The size and weight limits depend on your route:

Allowance by Route:

  • International Flights: 1 carry-on item (55 x 40 x 20cm, max 10kg/22lbs).
  • Domestic Iceland Flights: 1 carry-on item (55 x 30 x 20cm, max 6kg/13lbs).
  • Greenland Flights: 1 carry-on item (55 x 40 x 20cm, less than 10kg).

All passengers are also permitted to bring a small personal item, such as a handbag or laptop bag, onboard. This personal item must not exceed 40 x 30 x 15cm and should fit under the seat in front of you. All measurements must include wheels and handles.

If your hand baggage exceeds the size or weight limits, it will need to be checked into the aircraft hold, and additional fees may apply at the gate.

The checked baggage allowance with Icelandair depends on your fare type, cabin class, and route. Each piece of checked baggage must not exceed the total combined linear dimensions of 158cm (62in), including handles and wheels. The weight allowance varies significantly by fare class and destination.

Allowance by Route and Fare Type:

  • International Flights & Domestic Iceland Flights:
    • Economy Light: No checked baggage included—bags must be purchased separately.
    • Economy Standard: 1 checked bag weighing no more than 23kg (50lbs).
    • Economy Flex: 1 checked bag weighing no more than 23kg (50lbs).
    • Saga Premium: 2 checked bags, each weighing no more than 32kg (70lbs).
    • Saga Premium Flex: 2 checked bags, each weighing no more than 32kg (70lbs).
  • Greenland Flights:
    • Economy Light: No checked baggage included—bags must be purchased separately.
    • Economy Standard: 1 checked bag weighing no more than 20kg (44lbs).
    • Economy Flex: 1 checked bag weighing no more than 20kg (44lbs).
    • Saga Premium: 2 checked bags with reduced weight limits.
    • Saga Premium Flex: 2 checked bags with reduced weight limits.

In adverse weather conditions on Greenland routes, further weight restrictions may apply, and bags may be offloaded to the next available flight to ensure aircraft safety.

For more details on your specific checked baggage allowance, visit Icelandair's baggage allowance page or check your booking confirmation.

Overweight Baggage

  • If your checked bag exceeds the weight limit included in your fare (23kg for Economy or 32kg for Saga Premium), excess weight fees will apply.
  • Bags weighing between 24-32kg can only be paid for at the airport—they cannot be pre-purchased online.
  • Bags exceeding 32kg are not accepted on Icelandair flights under any circumstances.

Oversized Baggage

  • Baggage exceeding the maximum combined linear dimensions of 158cm (62in) is classified as "odd-sized" baggage.
  • These items require special handling and will incur additional excess baggage fees at the airport.

Important Considerations

  • Excess baggage fees are non-refundable.
  • It's recommended to arrive at the airport early if travelling with overweight or oversized items to allow sufficient time for processing and payment.
  • Items over certain size or weight limits may not be accommodated on smaller aircraft, particularly on domestic Iceland and Greenland routes.
  • For connecting flights operated by other airlines, heavy bags or extra bags can only be purchased at the airport.

For current excess baggage fees, consult Icelandair's optional services and fees page or contact the airline directly.

Icelandair accepts a wide range of special items including sports equipment, musical instruments, and other bulky items, though specific restrictions and fees apply.

Sports Equipment

Popular sports equipment accepted by Icelandair includes:

  • Bicycles: Must be wrapped in clear thick plastic, packed in a special bike box, or placed in a protective bag or case. Icelandair assumes no liability for insufficiently packaged bicycles.
  • Golf clubs and equipment: Should be packed in a golf bag or protective case to prevent damage during handling.
  • Ski and snowboard equipment: Must be properly packed to prevent damage.
  • Diving equipment: Advance arrangements are recommended, and items should be securely packed.
  • Water ski equipment: Requires proper packaging and may need advance arrangements.

Musical Instruments

Musical instruments can be carried in the cabin or checked, but strict requirements apply:

  • Small instruments: Can be included in your cabin baggage allowance if they meet size requirements and are packed in a hard shell case. Advance notice and permission from Icelandair are required for cabin carriage.
  • Large instruments: May need to be checked as excess baggage. Only hard shell cases are acceptable—soft bags are not permitted for checked musical instruments.

Other Special Items

Icelandair also accepts items such as avalanche backpacks, drones, walking poles, and more. However, restrictions apply to certain items, and we recommend checking with Icelandair directly before travelling.

Important Notes on Special Baggage

  • All sports equipment and musical instruments are treated as excess baggage and incur additional fees.
  • Proper packaging is essential—Icelandair assumes no liability for items with insufficient packaging.
  • Travel insurance is strongly recommended for all valuable sports equipment and fragile items.
  • Limited capacity may be available on certain flights for oversized items.

For a complete list of accepted special items, visit Icelandair's special baggage page or contact the airline directly.

Purchasing Extra Baggage

If you need to bring more bags than your fare allowance includes, you can purchase additional checked baggage. Pricing varies significantly depending on when and how you purchase:

Online Pre-Purchase (Best Value)

Extra bags can be purchased through Icelandair's 'Manage Booking' function on their website up to 7 days before your flight. Advance online purchase offers the lowest prices:

  • Iceland ↔ Europe: From £47 per bag (up to 23kg)
  • Iceland ↔ North America: From £55 per bag (up to 23kg)
  • Europe ↔ North America (via Iceland): From £75 per bag (up to 23kg)

These prices apply to one-way flights and represent significant savings compared to airport purchases.

Airport Purchase (Higher Cost)

If you don't pre-purchase extra baggage online, or if you need to purchase after the 7-day deadline, you'll need to pay at the airport, where fees are considerably higher.

Special Cases

  • Hunting gear: Can only be purchased and paid for at the airport—online purchase is not available.
  • Bags weighing 24-32kg: Cannot be pre-purchased online and must be paid for at the airport.
  • Connecting flights with other airlines: Extra bags can only be purchased at the airport during check-in.

Whilst we strive to keep this information as up-to-date as possible, baggage allowances and fees may vary and can change with little notice. For any information regarding your Icelandair baggage allowance, please check your booking confirmation and contact Icelandair directly.
